October 2004 |
Oct. 29: Jack Binch reported 7 Surf Scoters at the East end of Hyrum Reservoir and a Pacific Loon by
the banks, southeast of the dam.
Oct. 28: Kristin Purdy confirmed today that the Scoters reported by Richard Wood on Oct 27th were
six juvenile Surf Scoters.
Oct. 27: Richard Wood reported a group of Scoters out on Hyrum Lake. He could not decide if they were
White-winged or Surf Scoters. He went home to get his wife, Jill, and when he got back to the spot that he
had originally seen them, Richard saw a group of about 6 birds or so fly off, and they had white patches on
their wings. Richard would like anyone else that has seen the Scoters on Hyrum Lake to help confirm their
identities. Richard also reported seeing Common Loon, Pacific Loon, Western Grebes, American Coots,
Buffleheads and the usual gulls.
Oct. 25 : Tom Gordon reported 3 Blue Jays that have been hanging around his feeders for about a week.
His house is located in Clarkston at 211 S Main. It is a yellow house on the SW corner of 200 S and Main.
Tom says that you can call him at 563-1682 if interested. If he is not around, people are welcome to come
and park and watch from their cars; the feeders are on the north side of the house and the east side of the garage.
(Stephen Peterson visited Tom this evening and saw the 3 Blue Jays taking fresh peanuts that Tom put out for them.)
Oct. 17 : Bryan Dixon reported seeing a Three-toed Woodpecker and four Pine Grosbeaks at Spring Hollow
on the trail above the sink holes and scree field between 7500 and 8500 ft. elevation.
Oct. 11 : Mark Fogg, with Hawkwatch, reported seeing a female Western Bluebird crossing the Wellsville ridge,
heading East. Nice eyering and amber breast were evident. Also saw a flock of about 50 birds that he said were
possible Gray-Rosy Finch.
Oct. 3 : Richard Wood reported seeing a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker off a trail along the Blacksmith Fork river on
the way to Hardware Ranch. He reports that the trail is 5.4 miles east on Highway 101 from the traffic light in Hyrum.
You will find a small building next to a bridge that crosses the river. There is a yellow gate, and past that a trail that
goes towards the east. The trail goes left around a curve, and Richard says he saw the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker just
past this curve sitting low in the willow trees not far from the river. Richard says that the bird was definitely a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker and not a Red-naped Sapsucker, as this bird didn't have much red on his head, nor was his back as black.
It was more stripey than black.
